Certified Functional Ageing Specialist

I founded The Active Body Studio in 2011 when I was still a student of Future Fit Training School.

My passion for fitness, nutrition and general well being and my belief in its benefits motivated me to support others.

I enjoy running, swimming and any outdoor adventures. As part of my love for running I completed numerous marathons and half marathons including the:

Marathon des Sables
- 155 miles self supported multi stage marathon through the Sahara desert - 2008
Thames Meander
- 50 miles along the Thames Path - 2008
Race to the Stones
- 100km run along the ancient Neolithic footpath - 2015 and 2019

As a Functional Ageing Specialist I cannot stress enough the importance of physical activity on the quality of life in later stages.

The earlier you develop the habit of staying active the better the outcome

Parkinson’s Disease (PD)

  • Beginner | Condition specific
  • 60 Minute
  • moderate to high intensity
  • Low burn
  • Friendly group

The class is suitable for people with mild to moderate symptoms. Participants should be able to walk independently. During the session, some exercises will require 100% effort as that helps to stimulate neuroplasticity. Exercises will be multidirectional with an added challenge of cognitive tasks. Balance, coordination, and flexibility work will also be included in each session. Some loud speaking will be practised to maintain/or improve the voice projection so please remember to bring a bottle of water with you.

Important
Please consult your GP before starting a new exercise schedule or increasing your activity levels, especially if you have not been active recently or have been taking medications.

HiP (High intensity Pilates)

  • Low Impact
  • High Intensity
  • Friendly group

HiP is a high intensity but low impact workout. It helps you to address postural imbalances created by too much sitting. It complements activities like running, cycling or weightlifting by working your body in all three dimensions. There is no equipment: using only body weight. Each section has a beautifully choreographed sequence of movements to challenge your balance, strength, flexibility and coordination. It is a mixed ability workout which lasts 60 minutes and finishes with a cool down and stretches

Each session consists of cardiovascular, strength and flexibility elements in varied proportions depending on your needs, wants and personal goals. Sessions are arranged on a weekly basis or you can have a permanent slot (if available).

Balance and Coordination

To improve your overall wellbeing and help avoid a fall, Balance and Coordination skills need to be frequently practiced but they are often taken for granted or overlooked.

Improved Balance and Coordination will give you more confidence to move around your home and outside especially with the challenge of walking on an uneven surface or in a straight line with feet close together.

To make sessions more fun and personalised to your needs: static and dynamic balance exercises are included in all sessions in various forms.

Parkinson’s management iamge

Long term neurological conditions management

A regular exercise routine is vital for anybody diagnosed with a long-term neurological condition. Being active and exercising helps to slow down the loss of function. As a result it preserves current ability for longer.

Post rehab image

Hip and knee replacement post rehab

If you have had Hip or knee replacement surgery it is important to participate in a post rehabilitation exercise program which can accommodate and adapt to your personal needs.

Post Rehabilitation Exercise can improve:

  • muscle strength
  • coordination
  • endurance
  • proprioception
  • confidence
  • and by boosting your immune system your general wellbeing and happiness.

Staying active improves the health and density of their bones which results in improved fixation of the joint and decreases the probability of early loosening.

Important
To join this class, you will need confirmation from your surgeon or GP.

Testimonials

"I have been coming to The Active Body Studio exercise classes for over 3 years now (which is saying something, as I have never before stuck with an exercise routine).I would like to say Ela is such an amazing instructor making sure I do the moves properly hence no more sore neck, knees and back. She motivates me to work that much harder. Her classes are so much fun, much better than any gym. I always look forward to them and feel great afterwards too. Thank you Ela"

I'm writing this to publicly thank Ela Burningham and The Active Body Studio for helping me achieve what I thought was an impossible goal. 9 weeks ago I asked Ela for help after struggling to lose weight for over a year. After a week of doing a food diary, she put me on an 8 week plan which has resulted in me losing 10 kilos ( that's just over 1.5 stone, folks!) and believe it or not, it's been easy! Ela is the most amazing and encouraging motivator, a fabulous Piyo and fitness instructor and a great friend. I can't thank her enough. Finally, this isn't meant to be self congratulatory in the slightest, but rather, I hope, inspirational to those who might be fighting the flab like me. If I can do it, anyone can! Trust me - my will power is microscopic!“

Ela is a hidden gem I almost don't want to tell you about! I never thought it would be possible for someone like me to get fit but Ela's fantastic knowledge, expertise and care is helping me get there safely. Don't let a lack of confidence or fear of exercise hold you back. Ela's friendly support and motivation will help guide you to a stronger, fitter you - but dont't expect it to be easy.
